On January 7, 2007, father Mykola Dobrutsky, the designated priest of the Sts.
Volodymyr and Olha Ukrainian Catholic Church in Garner, NC, with the assistance of
Deacon Mark Shuey, celebrated Christmas mass in Ukrainian, according to the Julian
calendar. A group of enthusiastic parishioners reconditioned the garage on the church
property, and in less than a week transformed it into an attractive chapel. They did an
excellent job, and now the parish has a place of worship that can accommodate a larger
crowd. In order to accommodate the diversity of the parishioners, a mass in English was
celebrated after the mass in Ukrainian.
The service was attended by about 100 persons, and the small chapel resonated with
Ukrainian carols. After the mass everybody gathered for a social gathering and shared
the food brought by the parishioners. It was a wonderful occasion to visit with old
friends and to welcome new visitors. After the second mass, father Dobrutsky and a
small group of members of the Ukrainian Association of North Carolina visited several
families with Ukrainian carols. The tradition of caroling in people’s homes will continue
next weekend. Proceeds of the caroling will be donated to the church fund and for
shipping books to the library of a university in the city of Kryvyj Rih in Ukraine.
